All students practice both stand-up and ground-fighting techniquesMixed Martial Arts (MMA) is currently experiencing a worldwide explosion in popularity. Many people are being attracted to the functional nature of the training. Every technique we practice is designed to work against a resisting, unpredictable opponent. We don’t see any point in learning techniques which will only work if your opponent lets you do it, or relies on them attacking you in a certain way. It is this approach which contributes to making MMA the most effective self-defence system available today (as well as an exciting sport). It is one of the very few martial arts which truly relies on technique rather than strength or power, which makes it as effective for women as well as men.

Students working on the guard positionUniversity is a great place to start a new activity and MMA is no exception. The beginner's’ class is solely for people new to MMA and so you can learn from scratch in a class with people just like you. The club only trains during University term time and the first lesson for beginners is on Thursday 9th October but you can start at any time during the academic year. See the Training Times page for more details. Just come along to the University Sports Centre in some loose clothing and the staff will direct you to the Minor Hall where we train. For student members of the Sports Centre it only costs £1.65 per lesson and all equipment is provided. Hope to see you there!
